There is one race change for the 2026 season. The Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid has been added to the schedule, whilst the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola has been removed.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held on a Saturday to accommodate Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day on the Sunday of that weekend.

Cadillac will become the eleventh team in F1 for the 2026 season. Driving for Cadillac will be Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, who both last drove in the 2024 season.

Many of the other teams have retained their drivers from the 2025 season, including McLaren, who will again be represented by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Of those drivers who are changing teams, the most notable is Isack Hadjar, who moves from Racing Bulls to join Max Verstappen at Red Bull. The British driver, Arvid Lindblad, joins the Racing Bulls team after moving up from Formula 2.

2026 Drivers’ Championship Betting Odds

After one of the most exciting F1 seasons for many years, can the 2026 F1 season match the same levels of excitement? How do drivers score points in F1 2026?

There are two ways drivers can score points in the 2026 Formula 1 season—a top-10 finish in a Grand Prix or a top-eight finish in a sprint race. The awarding of points for the fastest lap was discontinued in 2025.

Driver points awarded – Grand Prix

In each of the 24 races, points will be awarded based on the finishing position of each driver. The top 10 finishers in each race will earn points as follows:

PositionPoints
1st25
2nd18
3rd15
4th12
5th10
6th8
7th6
8th4
9th2
10th1

Driver points awarded – Sprint

There are six sprints during the course of the 2026 Formula 1 season. These are separate races that take place on the Saturday of six specified F1 weekends. Points for sprint races are awarded as follows:

PositionPoints
1st8
2nd7
3rd6
4th5
5th4
6th3
7th2
8th1

What is the different between a Grand Prix and a Sprint race?

A sprint takes place over 100km, roughly a third of the distance of a regular Grand Prix race. Points are awarded for the top eight finishers in a sprint race, and they count towards the season’s driver standings. However, they do not count as official race wins, nor do they affect the grid positions in the main race, which are still decided by the qualifying rounds.

Which six weekends will hold sprint races in 2026?

The sprint races will be held during the following Grand Prix weekends. Only the Chinese and Miami Grand Prix sprint races remain from last year’s schedule.
• Chinese Grand Prix
• Miami Grand Prix
• Canadian Grand Prix
• British Grand Prix
• Dutch Grand Prix
• Singapore Grand Prix
