Paris 2024 Olympic Games football tips
As an indicator of the chances of the various teams, here’s a few highlights from the most recent Olympic football tournaments, held in Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Olympics were delayed until 2021, and the majority of matches were played behind closed doors. However, a limited audience was allowed at some games.
2020 Tokyo Olympics men’s football tournament highlights
- Brazil won the tournament, defeating Spain 2-1 after extra time in the final.
- Six of the Brazilian starting XI in the final played in the English Premier League last season (Diego Carlos, Douglas Luiz, Bruno Guimarães, Anthony, Matheus Cunha and Richarlison).
- Mexico won the bronze medal after overcoming the host nation, Japan, 3-1.
- The highest scorer in the tournament was Richarlison, although the Tottenham striker missed a penalty in the final.
- That was Brazil’s second successive men’s Olympic title after winning on home soil at the Maracanã in 2016. However, they will not make it three in a row, as they failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
- The three previous winners prior to 2016 were Mexico and Argentina (twice).
2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s football tournament highlights
- Canada defeated Sweden 3-2 on penalties in the final after the match finished 1-1 after extra-time.
- In a high-scoring tournament, Dutchwoman Vivianne Miedema was top scorer with 10 goals.
- The United States won the bronze medal match, beating Australia 4-3.
- The women’s tournament has featured in the last seven Olympics. The United States have won four gold medals.
- Sweden and Brazil have both been losing finalists twice.

Paris 2024 Men’s Tournament – predictions
Although the first three teams in the betting look certain to contend for the title, Paraguay look like an outsider with a chance of unsettling the fancied teams. In their seven qualifying matches, they won four times, drew twice and lost just once. In the final qualifying stage, they beat the reigning champions, Brazil, as well as drawing 3-3 with Argentina. They also drew with Argentina in the preliminary group stage and will be tough opponents.
Morocco won the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations to gain their place, with Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli heading the tournament scoring list with three goals and three assists. They will hope to emulate the success of the other African winners, Nigeria in Atlanta 1996 and Cameroon in Sydney 2000.
The United States have never won an Olympic football medal of any colour; however, that could change this year. When qualifying through the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, they topped their preliminary group and then won every match from the round of 16 onwards without conceding a goal (aggregate score 16-0). That included a 6-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in the final and, whilst their opponents also qualified, they are rightly considered the outsiders in the Olympic football betting.
If you’re looking for a long shot, Uzbekistan could be worth a second glance. They qualified through the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, winning all three of their group games without conceding a goal. They then beat the defending champions, Saudi Arabia, 2-0 in the quarter-finals before winning by the same score against Indonesia in the semi-finals. They lost the final 1-0 to Japan, but it took a 91st-minute winner to decide the match, and that was the only goal Uzbekistan conceded in the whole tournament. They can count themselves a bit unfortunate, as they also missed a penalty in the seventh minute of injury time and had the majority of shots, possession and corners during the match.

Paris 2024 Women’s football odds and favourites
The main difference with respect to the men’s tournament is that only 12 teams will participate. Additionally, there are no age restrictions on the women’s teams.

United States 2.81 | Australia 17.00 |

Germany 13.00 | Nigeria 67.00 |

Paris 2024 Women’s Tournament – predictions
In theory, the women’s tournament should be easier to predict, as there are fewer teams and no age restrictions, with all nations having their full international squad available.
The United States (USWNT) are favourites, having won four Olympic golds in the seven tournaments. They have lost just two of their last 23 matches, although they were held to a goalless draw by Costa Rica in their most recent match. However, in the 2023 women’s World Cup, the United States were eliminated by Sweden on penalties in the round of 16.
Spain are close second favourites, despite never having played in the Olympics before. However, Spain won the women’s World Cup, beating England 1-0 in the final. They also won the women’s Nations League earlier this year. The Spanish side are on an incredible run, having won 28 of their last 31 matches, and may prove too strong for the US team.
France are next best in the betting, although they were defeated by Spain 2-0 in that Nations League final. More recently, they topped their qualifying group for the 2025 women’s European Championship, finishing ahead of Sweden and England. The French have taken part in the Olympics twice before, with their best finish being fourth in London 2012.
Canada won the bronze medal in both 2012 and 2016 before beating Sweden on penalties in the Toyko 2020 final; however, they are a big price to repeat that feat here. They have drawn four of their last six matches, including two against the United States, both of which they subsequently lost on penalties.

Are there any notable managers in the Summer Olympics football?
In a word, yes! There are a couple of household names managing teams in the 2024 Olympics…
Thierry Henry—he also manages the French U-21 team, so will already be used to working with many of his players. Having been named Arsenal’s best ever player and having won a World Cup and European Championship title with France, can Henry reach similar heights as a manager?
Javier Mascherano—having been a double Olympic gold medal winner with Argentina as a player, Mascherano is now looking for a third medal, as he takes over the management of the Argentina Olympic team.
