Roulette

Roulette is the most well-known and established of Casino table games. It’s a favourite among beginners and experienced gamblers alike. Good chances of winning, simple rules and variety of betting options make roulette incredibly popular.

There are many tales surrounding the possible origins of roulette. According to one of them, the first iteration of the game was invented by a well renowned mathematician, Blaise Pascal! However, most historians agree that the first mentions of the game appeared in the early 18th century.

The game started growing in popularity in the finest European casinos and, after several tweaks, the modern version of roulette was introduced in the late 18th century.

The mechanics are simple: a croupier spins a wheel displaying red, black and green numbers in one direction, then rolls a ball around the wheel in the opposite direction.

The player has to guess the number of the pocket that the ball will land in.

Types of roulette games

European Roulette

There are 37 pockets on the wheel, with one green pocket labelled as ‘0’. The other pockets are either red or black, and are labelled from 1 to 36 in a specific order. The classic version of this game offers 10 types of bets, each with different chances of winning. Fun fact: the sum of all the numbers on the roulette wheel (from 0 to 36) is 666.

American Roulette

The biggest difference with this type of roulette is that there is also a double zero, which increases the number of pockets to 38. The numbers on the wheel are also arranged in a different order than in European roulette. Otherwise, American roulette is similar to the other variations of the game.

French Roulette

French roulette is considered to be the ancestor of all other styles of roulette. It’s very similar to the European roulette, but includes additional rules that increase the player’s chances of winning.

For example, the ‘La Partage’ rule, which states: “If the original spin is zero, the player gets half of any even-odd, red-black or high-low stake back”.

Also, the traditional game uses original French terms.

In French and European roulette, the return-to-player percentage can reach as high as 98.65%, while in the American variant it can reach 94.74%. If you want to play with less risk, European roulette may be the best option.
