The most prestigious European international football tournament is drawing closer. You can read the Marathonbet betting guide and predictions here, which focuses on the outright and group betting. In addition to the fight for the title, the seventeenth edition of the European Championship provides what is expected to be an exciting race to be the top scorer. Don’t miss the Euro 2024 Golden Boot predictions!

Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick both scored five goals in the last edition of this tournament, with the Portuguese star taking the Golden Boot trophy on the basis of having one assist compared to none for his rival.

Schick took the Silver Boot, whilst Karim Benzema, with four goals, took the Bronze Boot.

Who are the favourites for the Golden Boot?

Christiano Ronaldo finds himself amongst the favourites once again. The player from Madeira has the most goals in the history of the competition and wants to extend his record with his Portuguese team. Of course, stars like Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Antoine Griezmann are also candidates to finish as top scorers, and will be looking to lead their respective teams to the title.

Whilst the recent list of top scorers includes players from the top teams—Christiano Ronaldo (2020), Antoine Griezmann (2016), Fernando Torres (2012) and David Villa (2008)—there is also room for surprises.

As well as Patrik Schick matching Ronaldo last time, fellow Czech Milan Baroš topped the scoring charts in 2004 with five goals. Before that, Serbian Savo Milošević was joint top scorer in the 2000 European tournament, also with five goals.

What are the tie-break rules if players finish on the same number of goals?

If level, results are decided in this order:

  • tournament goals scored;
  • most tournament assists;
  • fewest minutes played.

Goals scored in periods of extra time count; however, goals scored in penalty shoot-outs, as well as  own goals, do not count.

Who were the top scorers in Euro 2020?

The top-10 goalscorers from the last tournament were:

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 5 goals + 1 assist
  2. Patrik Schick (Czech Republic) – 5 goals
  3. Karim Benzema (France) – 4 goals
  4. Emil Forsberg (Sweden) – 4 goals
  5. Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) – 4 goals
  6. Harry Kane (England) – 4 goals
  7. Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland) – 3 goals + 1 assist
  8. Raheem Sterling (England) – 3 goals + 1 assist
  9. Kasper Dolberg (Denmark) – 3 goals
  10. Robert Lewandowski (Poland) – 3 goals

Although Portugal were eliminated in the Round of 16, resulting in Cristiano Ronaldo having less time on the pitch than many of his goalscoring rivals, the Portuguese still managed to lead the scoring charts. Being a penalty taker proved a big advantage, with three of his five goals coming from the penalty spot.

Who will win the Golden Boot in Euro 2024?

With the final squads now announced, let’s take a look at a few of the leading fancies in this year’s race.

Kylian Mbappé | France

The 25-year-old Frenchman was top scorer in the 2022 World Cup with eight goals and will be hopeful of completing the double here. Blessed with great speed, ball skills and goal-scoring ability, Mbappé is bound to be on most people short-lists to be among the goals. With France, one of the favourites to win the title, you should get a good run for your money.

Harry Kane | England

Another name that always features near the top of the goalscoring betting markets is Harry Kane. England are also fancied to progress far into this tournament, so Kane should get plenty of pitch time, plus he also takes penalties. The striker will be desperate for a good tournament after seeing his first season at Bayern Munich end in disappointment, having failed to win the Bundesliga and losing at the semi-finals stage in the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo | Portugal

In what is likely to be his last appearance at the Euro finals, can the prolific Portuguese striker finish with a bang? He is currently the all-time top scorer in international matches, the top scorer in Euro qualifying and tournaments and has scored in more Euro final tournaments than any other player.

This will be his sixth appearance in the finals, and you wouldn’t bet against him making a few headlines in Germany.

Jude Bellingham | England

The English youngster has been in fine goalscoring form with Real Madrid this season and will hope that continues on the international stage. However, with England currently blessed with several creative attacking options, goals may be distributed amongst a few players, and the Golden Boot may prove difficult to attain.

Antoine Griezmann | France

With another key player for Les Blues in the form of the vastly experienced Antoine Griezmann, France manager Didier Deschamps has plenty of attacking options to utilise. Griezmann was top scorer in the 2016 Euro finals with six goals and could form a dynamic attacking force with teammate Mbappé.

Romelu Lukaku | Belgium

Although the Belgian Red Devils seem to frequently disappoint at the business end of big tournaments, the presence of Romelu Lukaku always poses a tremendous threat to any defence with his strength and power. After an underwhelming second spell at Inter, a large part of Roma’s improvement this season can be explained by the performance of their striker.

In addition, with a creative partner like Kevin de Bruyne supplying him with balls, Lukaku has a great chance to feature towards the top of the scorers list.

Robert Lewandowski | Poland

Having qualified for the Euro finals in Germany, Poland boasts one of the world’s best strikers in Robert Lewandowski. His wide range of abilities make the Barcelona player a constant threat to any defence he encounters.

Aside from his age, his biggest handicap compared to the other rivals in this market may be the fact that he is part of a lower-level national team. Poland’s chances of progressing beyond the group stages depend heavily on the Warsaw native’s goals.

Álvaro Morata | Spain

The Spanish captain has been in good form this season and scored three goals in the four matches he played at the last World Cup. He also scored three times in the last Euro finals and, if Spain progress to the latter stages of the tournament, the Atlético Madrid striker could be a lively outsider to take the scoring honours here.

Patrik Schick | Czech Republic

Can the Czech striker emulate his performance at the last Euros where he finished joint top-scorer? He will not be short of confidence after seeing his club side, Bayer Leverkusen, storm to the German Bundesliga title. Although they aren’t one of the strongest sides in the tournament, the Czechs have been drawn in a favourable group, giving Schick a chance of making at least the Round of 16 with his side.

Odds of around 51.00 could tempt a few bettors!

Tips for betting on the Golden Boot

There are several things to consider when making your picks for the Golden Boot winner.

Although it was not the case with Portugal last time around, you would generally want your player to feature in a team that progresses to the latter stages of the tournament. You should also consider the abilities of the other teams in the first-stage group, as you will already know the three opponents your selection is scheduled to play against.

Does your player take penalties? The addition of a couple of goals through successful penalties can make a decisive advantage in this market.

Also consider the make-up of the team in which your selection plays. Is he the main striker who plays upfront on his own and will likely score a high percentage of his team’s goals, or are the goals usually distributed fairly evenly amongst several players within the team?

Of course, there is no doubt that there are many great scorers in these Euro Finals, any of whom could find a purple patch and win the award, and our list contains just a small sample of possible winners. For all the latest odds on the likely contenders, check the full list on the website. Who is your prediction to win the Golden Boot?
